Multi-Million Plan for Carbon Dioxide

Npower recently announced that is has signed a multi-million pound contract which for a project aimed at cutting the UK’s carbon dioxide emission down to only 40,000 tonnes a year from it Little Barford Power Station.

The project is expected to cost around £100 million but the investment is expected to improve efficiency greatly and the power station in St Noets is expected to receive equipment upgrades to two of the existing gas turbines which will result in a better reliability and environmental performance. Such a large sum means that Npower are keen to have things done right and meet the standards of today’s green and environmentally aware society. The upgrade is expected to incorporate the use of the very latest technology from GE technologies who will also be carrying out the work for Npower.

The Chief Technical Officer for Npower, Kevin McCullough, said that, “Modern gas-fired power stations are already the cleanest fossil fuelled power stations.” As a result of the improvement expected as a result of the investment he also said “we will be in the best position to provide reliable power generation into the future.”

This plan isn’t particularly a recent one thought the wheels have been put into motion as far as progress with the project. The work on the upgrades will commence as soon as possible with the aim of been up and running by the end of summer 2012. Little Barford will also receive a new control system to make sure that there is continuous reliability and flexibility at the site.

First Utility announces first Smart Meter give-away

Thousands of households across the UK will soon be able to acquire more accurate energy bills. In the coming months, First Utility will offer customers on its cheap iSave tariff a free smart meter, initially this offer will only be available in the Midlands but it will then spread to the rest of the UK by the end of the year. Smart meters have the ability to monitor exact energy usage several times a day, resulting in accurate bills. The government has already stated that all households in the country must have one of these meters by the end of 2020. It is hoped that they will lead to reduced carbon level as householders will be able to pay more attention to their energy usage and therefore control it.
Energy specialists state that once smart meters are a firm fixture on UK households, energy bills should be cheaper. However this will only happen if customers learn from their meters, a spokesman for Npower explains that ‘If I gave you a smart meter now you wouldn't save a penny, it’s about encouraging you to interact with it and that's what energy companies need to be doing. The benefits will only come when you start paying attention to it’. Some remain quite sceptical about the impact that these smart meters will actually have on our energy usage, believing that they will be viewed as a household novelty, which will soon wear off. If customers do pay more attention to their energy usage they may find that they are using more than they actually need. British Gas is expected to follow First Utility’s lead after announcing that it wants to recruit over 2,000 ‘smart meter experts’ by 2012.

Annual Bills Look Likely to Rise

If there was ever he need to become more energy efficient and ‘green’ aware then now might be the time. An estimated energy bill over the course of the year could soon rise to the staggering sum of £1000 for the average family. This news comes after leading UK energy provider British Gas announced that they are planning a 22% increase on its prices for gas and electricity.

The increase has already come into effect, since March 1st, but they come shortly after a 14% increase was applied. The seemingly constant rise in energy prices is starting to become alarming as the average British Gas bill charges £628 for gas and £391 for electricity. When the news broke it was heralded as “the bleakest day yet“ for consumers according to Enerywatch.

Despite having such high prices, British Gas still maintains the highest amount of customers out of all the other UK energy providers, despite Ofgem suggesting consumers shop around to find the cheapest and most suitable energy provider.

A spokeswoman for Ofgem said that, “you can save £191 if you switch from British Gas”, the annual saving will go a long way for some customers who heed the advice.

British Gas aren’t the only energy provider raising its prices as Scottish Power have raised their own prices, gas has went up 15% meanwhile electricity prices has went up by 8%. French company EDF announced similar increase also with gas going up by 14.7% and electricity 4.7%. The consistent rise when it comes to energy bills makes it even more important for homeowner to be energy efficient in an attempt to save them some money.

Gas bills cut by leading providers
Scottish and Southern Energy has announced plans to cut its gas bills for domestic customers by 4% from the 29th March. The average bill will drop by up to £30 as a result of the cut; the company have stated that its average dual fuel standard bill would stand at £1,162 although this price may vary depending on which part of the country you live in. This move comes after British Gas announced plans to cut its standard pricing by an average of 7%, other companies are expected to follow suit soon.
Scottish and Southern have nearly 10 million customers across the UK, who use their gas, electricity or a combination of them both. Households who have relatively low gas usage will not feel the full affect of the price cuts, it is households using above the fixed level that will benefit from the 4% cut. Alistair Phillips-Davis, the company’s energy supply director explains that ‘Energy supply is still a challenging business, with significant upward price pressures which run counter to reductions in wholesale costs, we will do everything we can to make sure customers get value for money from energy supply, with energy efficiency and customer service continuing to be top priorities’. The company has also followed demands made by consumer groups and a price regulator to remove the price differential for pre payment gas meters. Pre payment customers will see their annual bill fall by 9%, a £70 drop on average.
After the wholesale price of gas decreased, suppliers have felt the pressure to lower their prices for the customer. With British Gas and Scottish and Southern already setting the standard, it will not be long before others follow suit.

Get Rewards with your Bank and Energy Provider

Leading UK energy provider Npower and leading international bank Barclays have come together and set up a scheme that will benefit the customers of both companies. In celebration of their long partnership customers will be able to benefit with a reward of £160 in the space of year. The system is recorded by how many pounds spent on their Barclays cards in connection with thousands of UK retailers. The rewards will only apply to Barclaycard Freedom holders.

The breakdown of rewards works like this; £60 incentive gift when Barclaycard Freedom customers change from their current gas and electricity and sign up with Npower before the 17th of May 2010, it they weren’t already. There is then a £100 reward for loyalty each month paid by direct debit for the use of both fuels.

The Managing Director of Npower Retail Markets, one Giuseppe Di Vita, had this to say, “Customers have told us that they would like more freedom in the way that they are rewarded for joining and staying with Npower. The Barclaycard Freedom scheme enables us to give customers the choice of 30,000 retailers to redeem their Reward Money.”

The scheme will be launched in March 17th until the 17th of May 2010 which of course means there is a limited time for customers to reap these benefits. The pounds and pence rewards means that customer receive cash so that they aren’t dealing with vouchers, coupons or any sort of points systems, they are simply debited the money straight into their accounts.
